Electrical Systems

Electrical systems are introduced from Key Stage 2 and are an opportunity to link design technology to children's learning about simple circuits in science. In the nightlights unit of work, children design and make a nightlight. They learn how to break down a product into its component part to help when designing. They apply their knowledge of structures to create a stand for the nightlight and make the nightlight shade using papier mache techniques. The nightlight is completed by adding an electric light circuit with a switch.

In the torches unit of work for Lower Key Stage 2, children have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding of electrical circuits to create a torch product. In designing and making a headlamp torch, children learn about designing a torch to match the specific need of a client. They use their knowledge of materials and structures to create the body of the torch and then complete the torch by adding an electric light circuit with a switch and a head strap.

Shadow puppets is an exciting project that covers a range of learning in design technology and also offers children the opportunity to apply their knowledge and understanding from science lessons. Children design and make a wooden framed shadow puppet theatre to present a play for their frames. Children learn how the properties of materials are important when making a product and how an simple electrical system can be incorporated into a product. When making a movable puppet, children learn how a simple linkage hinge system can be used to create moving arms and legs.
